In 1991 Alexander Lukashenko became the president of
a newly independent Belarus. It is believed that he
has maintained authoritarian control over the country
by falsifying subsequent elections. Today, Belarus is
the last remaining dictatorship in Europe and anyone
who voices criticism of or opposition toward Lukashenko
risks imprisonment and torture. This engaging documentary
follows artist, Alexander Pushin, as he single-handedly
challenges Lukashenko's regime through performances,
paintings and demonstrations. Despite the threat of
grave consequences, Pushkin organizes public stunts
that mock the president and encourages other Belarusians
to oppose his totalitarian rule. Through Pushkin's art
and sense of humor, as interpreted by the artist himself
as well as his family, this documentary takes an up
close and personal look at the soul of the Belarusian
people.
