In
September of 1944, during the last days of the Warsaw
Uprising, Lieutenant Zadra finds himself commanding
a platoon of 43 soldiers in a desperate battle amidst
the ruins of the city's Mokotów district. Facing a strong
German offensive and cut off from fellow soldiers, Zadra
is ordered to take his platoon and retreat through the
sewers (kanal in Polish) to the downtown district. Reluctant
to admit defeat, but determined to survive, the men
and women of the platoon slog through the hellish labyrinth,
only to become separated. At the center of the hellish
journey are Daisy and Corporal Korab who rally and encourage
one another to continue the trek despite the desperation
and doom than surrounds them. They finally reach the
Vistula River only to find out the iron gate which locks
the sewer.
