Russian
film critics called this epic "a phosphorescent
anachronism." The film treats history in a selective
way. It starts with a death of Tsar Boris Godunov in
1605 and ends in 1613, on the eve of Michail Romanov's
election for a tsar. That time is marked by anarchy
and inner fighting for a throne. The film core is a
thorny love between Andrey, a son of carpenter and Princess
Ksenia, Godunov's daughter. Ksenia is imprisoned by
a cruel Polish hetman Kibovsky, who reached Moscow with
his hussars and murdered rightful heirs to the throne.
Marriage with Ksenia should give him a title of tsar
and government over a vast territory of Russia. However,
hetman falls in love with his victim, facing a difficult
choice: to respect her freedom or ruthlessly aim at
taking over power.
