SYNOPSIS:

The 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia is brought to life in Jacek Glomb's Operation Danube, a comic telling of a tank squadron separated from its troops behind enemy lines. Sergeant Kotwicz and his team of idealistic but incompetent soldiers, set out proudly on their tank "Ladybug," only to end up crashing into the side of a beer tavern in a small Czech town with no means of getting back. Trying to find a way out of the situation without having to tell their superiors, the soldiers must deal with the town locals in what becomes a hilarious Polish-Czech culture clash. The film acts as an obvious criticism of the Communist invasion, while also being an astute look at national Polish and Czech stereotypes. Glomb uses a fine combination of slapstick and wit to challenge the notion of national character, specifically Polish combativeness and Czech pacifism. A fantastic cast bragging some of Poland's best actors, the film also boasts an appearance by famous Czech New Wave director Jiri Menzel.
