JASMINUM
WINS 18th POLISH FILM
FESTIVAL IN AMERICA

Sixteen days of screenings in four film centers,
eighty movies, numerous world, international
and North American premiers, a number of sold
out shows, hundreds of guests from all over
the world, a substantial interest from local,
national and international media - it can summarize
the 18th Polish Film Festival in America, the
world's largest showcase of Polish film which
has just ended in Chicago.
JASMINUM,
a comedy by Jan Jakub Kolski received the Golden
Teeth Award for the most interesting feature
film given by the audience jury while HOW TO
DO IT, a new film by Marcel Lozinski was awarded
the same prize in the documentary film category.
KAROL, THE POPE, THE MAN, an Italian bio pic
by Giacomo Battiato was distinguished with a
Special Jury Award for its outstanding humanitarian
values.
Festival
presented its most prestigious Wings Awards
for the outstanding achievements in the art
of film beyond Poland to director Krzysztof
Kieslowski (posthumously) and cinematographer
Slawomir Idziak. The inaugural Golden Ciupaga
Award for his contributions in promoting Polish
cinema in the States was given to Richard Pena,
director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center
and the New York Film Festival.
A
U.S. premiere of COPYING BEETHOVEN, a new film
by Agnieszka Holland, resulted in ten minute
standing ovation for the director who then spoke
with the full house audience for nearly one
hour. Similar ovation received actor Piotr Adamczyk
playing a title role in KAROL, THE POPE, THE
MAN.
The
awarded films will be shown at the special presentations
over the weekend of November 25 and 26 in Portage
Theatre (4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago). JASMINUM
will be shown on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7:00 pm.,
KAROL, THE POPE, THE MAN - on Sunday, Nov. 26
at 2:30 pm., while documentary film HOW TO DO
IT will have its special screening on Sunday
at 6:00 pm.
