Young
Julia is happy and fulfilled, both personally and professionally:
her career as a photographer is going from strength
to strength, she is close to her sister, her successful
artist parents - father is a filmmaker, mother a writer
- and her loving husband who is a contemporary music
composer. Love and mutual esteem bind this family together:
spending long summer evenings under the stars, talking
about each others' work and future projects, in a warm
and festive atmosphere. However, this idyllic period
comes to an end when Julia's mother learns she has cancer.
This disease, the outcome of which remains in doubt
for a long time, has a profoundly disturbing effect
on them all, and Julia, whose career begins to suffer,
sees those around her, those who used to protect her,
collapse one after another.

As
a result of Soviet Union invasion on Poland on September
17, 1939, 4500 of Polish officers and cadets were taken
captive and imprisoned in P.O.W. camp in Kozielsk in
USSR. By the order of Stalin, most of them were executed
in Katyn near Smolensk in April and May 1940. All together
about 22 thousand of officers, soldiers and policemen
imprisoned in three camps: Kozielsk, Ostaszkowo, and
Starobielsk were murdered. In 1943 Germans announced
that they discovered the graves of murdered by NKVD
in Katyn. Soviets denied and accused Germans of this
crime. Soviets deliberately fabricated evidence to authenticate
their lie. In communist Poland telling the truth about
Katyn resulted in persecution by Secret Police. "Katyn"
does not tell the story of Katyn massacre. The film
tells about Katyn lie. Families of the victims had to
live with awareness of not only a great harm, but also
a cynical lie.

survivors of Soviet deportation to Siberia during the
Second World War describe their experiences as the youngest

were experienced by children and teenagers. The film's
director is also beginning on a companion work, Women

A
story of rebellion, love and the confusion of growing
up, of the search for meaning and a place in a changing
world, based on the famed novel by Polish writer Stefan
Zeromski. Prior to the outbreak of war, the protagonist,
Cezary Baryka, lives with his parents in the multiracial
city of Baku. At the time of his first falling in love,
Russian revolutionaries invade the town. His friends
and his beloved Armenian girl, Aida, are murdered, and
his mother is arrested and dies in a work camp. His
father, who returns home secretly, convinces his son
to leave for Poland and to look up a family friend when
he gets to Warsaw. War breaks out and on the battlefield
Cezary saves the life of his friend Hipolit. The young
aristocrat later invites him to visit his family estate
in Nawloc. But then love enters Cezary's life once more.
His inner voice warns him what he should not do, but
it no longer suggests what is most important in life.
Only tragic events can lead this young man to the threshold
of maturity.

6-years-old
Stefek has his head in the clouds. The bit of reality
he needs, he imagines it. He closes small deals with
destiny and does not shy away from white lies either.
He loves to hang out at the train station and to accompany
his 17-years-old sister Elka wherever she goes. Sometimes
he shows up at her dates or squeezes himself in between
her an her admirer on the motorbike. He observes a man
on the platform who always just manages to catch the
train. Stefek assumes that this man is his father whom
he never met. He almost manages to lure him to his mother's
shop using one of his tricks. But sometimes tricks simply
fail. Is it really his father anyway? What is he going
to do with the bouquet of red roses? Is it possible
to just wish to have a father and to conjure one up
like in a fairy tale? Which train do you need to take
to get to your destination? A laconic and relaxed film
about the power of a child's imagination. And a poetic
portrait of the Polish province.

"Experimental
animation is a broad notion that can be applied to many
genres of animated film that break with formal and narrative
conventions. The present anthology is a selection of
some forty productions that do not quite fit into the
mainstream of film animation. On the three discs the
viewer will find abstract films, films composed of photographic
images subjected to manipulation, as well as animations
drawn in unconventional fashion. Some of these are works
by well-known artists from beyond the cinematic milieu
- writer Stefan Themerson and his painter wife Franciszka,
for example, the designer Andrzej Pawlowski, or the
photographer Tomek Sikora. There are also works by leading
Polish contemporary artists like Jozef Robakowski and
Jerzy Kalina. There is no lack of work by world-renowned
animators like Jan Lenica, Walerian Borowczyk, Zbigniew
Rybczynski or Jerzy Kucia. The choice of films included
in the Anthology of Polish Experimental Animation is
so varied that every viewer is sure to find something
of great interest".

Polskie
Wydawnictwo Audiowizualne has released the long-awaited
DVD album "Anthology of Polish Children's Animation".
Thirty-seven best Polish animated films on three DVD
records complete with texts by the series editor, Marcin
Gizycki.
An Anthology of Polish Children's Animation includes
almost forty shorts chosen from amongst several hundred
award-winning or critically well-received films from
the last 60 years. Although it does not include selections
from the most popular animated series (they deserve
a separate release), some of those characters, like
Bolek and Lolek or Rexie are represented here, as they
had previously appeared in separate films. The works
presented here contain no violence, but are intended
not only for younger viewers, but also for lovers of
art film, who will value their unusually high artistic
quality and innovative form. Among the directors included
are some of the most famous names in Polish animation,
among them Zenon Wasilewski, Witold Giersz, Daniel Szczechura,
Julian Antonisz, and Academy Award-winner Zbigniew Rybczyński.

After
selling his flat, and before his new home has been completed,
Bartek, heavily in debt, asks his mother if he and his
family can come and stay for a while. He has no idea
that he is being conned and that he will be dependent
on his mother's income. The differing interests and
needs of the central characters, forced into co-existence,
give rise to unpleasant conflicts. Lack of privacy demoralises
Bartek's wife Beata, in particular, who has to look
after her small children and put up with the selfishness
of her family. Animosity grows between the two women
and Bartek, fed up with the constant squabbling, takes
off. In the heat of the moment, desperate Beata does
something very foolhardy, and the legal outcome begs
the question: "Who is guilty?" The filmmakers
took the socio-ethical dimension of their drama from
real life, hence the broadcasting style of their testimony
about the ordinary ambitions of their contemporaries,
their attitudes and destinies. The film is also about
unscrupulous behaviour and lack of responsibility, today
all too common phenomena - without the effort or will
to show love and compassion.

Film by Jerzy Hoffman based on the book "Stara
Basn" written by Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski. "The
story of 'When the Sun was God An Ancient Tale' is happening
one hundred years before the christening of Poland in
the world of magic and pagan witchcraft, where the gods
take active parts in the lives of ordinary men. In the
land of Polan people, the power belongs to the cruel
prince Popiel, who according to a legend was finally
eaten by mice... He is set to ensure the succession
of his son and will do it by all means including plotting,
scheming and murdering. When Popiel's actions cause
people to revolt, he asks the Vikings for help... At
the same time, the young huntsman and warrior Ziemowit
Piast has fallen in love with the daughter of the wealthy
serf Wisz. But the beautiful Dziwa is meant for the
gods... In this powerful tale, the fates of the characters
interlace in an everlasting fight between the good and
the evil and in the human passions of love, hatred and
the greed for power."

JASMINUM
is a Latin word for Jasmine. The plot is set in a monastery
in our times. Apart from Prior Kleofas and Brother Sanitas,
three other monks who reside there have their own particular
body scents. The prior is dead bent on finding portents
of the soon-to-come fulfillment of Prophet Barnabas'
prophecy while Brethren Plum, Cherry and Birdcherry
issue body odors, each one according to his name. One
day a young art restorer Natasha arrives to the monastery,
commissioned for a conservation of the sacred paintings.
She brings in her five year old daughter Gienia whose
charm and inquiring mind wreak havoc in the monks' monotonous
life. And there starts a mysterious and magical story
filled with sensuous scents and love?

The
importance of these films lies (...) not only in the
sharp and critical tone they adopt, nor in the function
of direct social intervention they perform. These films
show some kind of rehabilitation of a social documentary's
general sense. For the first time in years viewers are
brutally and provocatively attacked, which makes them
forget that they are sitting in front of the screen.
They are treated with a highly meaningful piece of reality,
presented with passion and with no resistance, in an
observant and intelligent way. (...) The projection
room becomes filled with strong excitement. Polish film
has not long been able to unleash so many powerful feelings
and shrewd thoughts in the spectators. (...) Such is
the signal that we are witnessing a significant event
in the history of Polish cinema. Boleslaw Michalek,

"...These
are sheer numbers and prizes that bear testimony to
the past significance of Polish animation: 162 films
exported in 1963 alone, 1974 proceeds from animated
film exports higher than these from sales of feature
films, dozens of highest prizes at most important festivals
and competitions, Oscar for Zbigniew Rybczyński for
"Tango", and so on, and so forth. The present
anthology is the firs attempt to make at least a part
of the extremely extensive output of Polish animators
available to wider audiences. (...) The two DVDs which
we present to cinema lovers, did not have enough room
to contain all the outstanding Polish animated films
of the last six decades, nor present all the makers
worthy of attention. We do hope, however, that the selection
is representative enough to let those viewers, who are
not very well familiar with the history of Polish animation,
get to know it better, while to its enthusiasts, it
will bring back almost thirty of its gems."

Gryczełowska,
Kamieńska and Halladin are three great individualities
of the Polish Documentary School. Each of them, disparately,
paints a vision of Poland in the 60s, 70s and 80s. It
is difficult to imagine Polish documentary cinema without
their films, (...) they never created films together,
neither were their achievements linked through a common
denominator, nor were they brought together, like they
have in this compilation. Nevertheless, the output of
these three documentary filmmakers does have plenty
in common. Against the background of other films, these
stand out thanks to their very specific vantage points.
The authors adopt the attitude of a "delicate observer",
who looks at the world penetratingly and warmly".

Actually,
the genre i work within is of secondary importance to
me. I am interested in the diverse expressions of polish
reality and their historical and cultural roots. I do
not divide subject matter into contemporary and historical.
[...] The reality which surrounds us is anchored in
the past. I, for example, being a part of the process,
am continuously growing out of the past. In my films,
i try to make the viewer aware of this continuity. I
believe that we can communicate on this level. I express
my feelings in a lyrical, grotesque, exalted and ironic
way. [...] I try to construct each piece so that the
viewer can choose the tonality to suit his temperament,
mood and experience. Because it is only time that can
tell the truly tragic from the comical. [wojciech wiszniewski,

some scenes in my films suggest that I treat people

[...] Stupidity is more flavoursome food for artistic

One
should look for the sources of the legend that surrounds
the person and work of Andrzej Munk (1921-1961) in his
untimely and tragic death and, above all, in the belief
that what he did create as filmmaker and what he had
no time to create contains a mystery. This belief stems
from the experience of his films and the feeling that
his sudden death put an end to an important current
in the history of Polish cinema; a separate phenomenon
deprived of spiritual partners and followers. (...)
He was fascinated with experiment in art. This is, after
all, how his early documentaries have to be seen. In
the 1950s, fictionalizing the documentary form - or
to put things in the opposite way - employment of the
documentary film poetics to depict fictional events,
was the mark of his experimental approach, his search
for new forms of expression. However, Munk treated formal
experiments in a special way. One can safely assume
that in most cases - which is particularly evident in
the first, documentary period of his work - these formal
experiments opposed, in moral terms, the imposed propaganda
goals, standardized ideology and aesthetic norms. These
became de-mythologized through revealing the presence
of real people in the ideologically-programmed un-reality,
as well as through his search for forms of cinematic
imaging able to destroy certain binding conventions.
Andrzej Munk, the rebellious documentary filmmaker,
remained one even when he had moved away from the documentary
towards feature films.

Why do I shoot documentaries?
-Cause there are things going on around, in me, too,

"A
particularly vital question that they raise, concerns
the relation between the historical and the universal.
The reason why Drygas's films enjoyed success throughout
Europe, was not a tremendous interest of international
audiences in the picture of life under Communist rule
in Poland. The universal, the commonly understood, is
hidden right in the historical detail, in the non-simplified
truth of life at a concrete time and place, one that
is easily convertible into other people's experience

Based
on Jerzy Kawalerowicz's script, Polanski's first feature
film is considered one of the most significant cinematic
achievements of Eastern European cinema during the Communist
era. It is a simple, intimate story involving a couple
on a yachting weekend who participate in an intricate-and
dangerous-emotional game with a young, attractive hitchhiker.
With just three characters, a boat, and a huge expanse
of sea, the film descends into dramatic convolutions
that build an ambiguous tension while revealing the
deep psychological complexities of the characters.

In an extraordinary cross-gender performance, actress
Krystyna Feldman becomes the curmudgeonly Polish folk
artist Nikifor, a naive painter whose prolific talent
and sheer stubbornness brought him national fame. Based
on a true story, My Nikifor (crystal globe award, Karlovy
Vary 2005) unfolds in mid-20th-century Poland across
a gray winter landscape further oppressed by Communist
party politics and perpetual shortages. The sickly beggar
Nikifor, a cantankerous troll who dismisses everything
and everyone, freely invades other people's homes uninvited
in order to paint. When he claims the studio of state-employed
painter Marian Wlosinski, Wlosinski's life begins to
unravel. He can't figure out where Nikifor came from
or where he belongs, can't get rid of him and, ultimately,
can't help but adopt him at the expense of his own comfort
and family. This vivid character study presents Nikifor
as the necessary grit that upsets complacency, leaving
us to ponder the Nikifors in our world today.

Teenagers in modern Warsaw: Kuba Brenner wants to become
a violinist. Kuba wants to help his very shy friend,
Oskar, to meet some girls. Through a series of complicated
(and very humorous) accidents, Kuba finds himself in
the middle of a meeting of the local Polish Mafia. Events
go from bad to worse for Kuba when some men attempt
to rob the gangsters: shots are fired, and two of the
bandits, Grucha and Bolec, are wounded.
When
the smoke clears, the gangsters' suitcase, stuffed with
cash, has vanished, and the boy is missing as well.
Kuba suddenly has a new, bigger problem to solve: the
Mafia really wants to find him, and we all know what
that means for our young friend.
One
of the best Polish comedies of the late 1990's, "Boys
Don't Cry" is a satirical look at the gangsters
of Poland and some teens who accidentally get involved
with them. The humor is black, sometimes vulgar, and
always hilarious. The cast comes from the new generation
of Polish actors, and all are very talented.

Quo Vadis is a grand historical epic based on the novel
by Henryk Sienkiewicz running four and a half hours
in length. Although this is long by most standards,
it really does allow the plot to fully develop and be
brought to a conclusion. We get a glimpse of many parts
of life in Rome, from wild drunken parties with plenty
of topless women, a gruesome close up of lions eating
Christians in the coliseum, and even the burning of
Rome itself.
The
story has several elements that are all dovetail each
other. We have a young patrician named Marcus Vinicius
(Pawel Delag) who falls in love with Lygia (Magdalena
Mielcarz), a Christian woman. At first she is not interested
in him, but soon returns his love. Petronius (Boguslaw
Linda), who is one of Nero's advisors, tries to help
him physically capture his love as he has influence
with Nero. Matters are complicated as Nero is out of
control and is most concerned about his insane self-interests,
which leads to trouble for many others.
Boguslaw
Linda was one of the best performers in the film. As
he was the middleman between Marcus and the crazed Nero,
his position from the start was precarious. He portrayed
the patrician who was calm and collected in moments
of confusion, sincere with his feelings, and often had
witty remarks. Linda's acting was fantastic.
Quo
Vadis is perfect for those who enjoy historic epics.
Overall, I thought the underlying message was about
forgiveness and love, something we can all relate to
and topics that would not hurt us to reflect upon. With
nearly all of its characters experiencing moments of
triumph and suffering, we witness and experience a wide
range of emotions in this story that takes place about
two thousand years ago.

The
film goes beyond the story of an adult man and a teenage
girl's friendship. Just like early Kustorica or Tanovic,
in his "No Man's Land," Polish director Jakimowski
is a master of balancing the borderline between gravity,
irony and comedy.
Gala
of Polish Film Awards took place on the 6th March in
Warsaw Royal Castle. Eagles 2004 are given by the members
of Polish Film Academy. And who won in 2004? Five eagles
flight to "Squint Your Eyes," by Andrzej Jakimowski,
in four categories: for the best movie, for the best
director, for the best actor, for the best script and
the best-liked film by the viewing audience.
