After selling his flat, and before his new home has been completed, Bartek, heavily in debt, asks his mother if he and his family can come and stay for a while. He has no idea that he is being conned and that he will be dependent on his mother's income. The differing interests and needs of the central characters, forced into co-existence, give rise to unpleasant conflicts. Lack of privacy demoralises Bartek's wife Beata, in particular, who has to look after her small children and put up with the selfishness of her family. Animosity grows between the two women and Bartek, fed up with the constant squabbling, takes off. In the heat of the moment, desperate Beata does something very foolhardy, and the legal outcome begs the question: "Who is guilty?" The filmmakers took the socio-ethical dimension of their drama from real life, hence the broadcasting style of their testimony about the ordinary ambitions of their contemporaries, their attitudes and destinies. The film is also about unscrupulous behaviour and lack of responsibility, today all too common phenomena - without the effort or will to show love and compassion.

The importance of these films lies (...) not only in the sharp and critical tone they adopt, nor in the function of direct social intervention they perform. These films show some kind of rehabilitation of a social documentary's general sense. For the first time in years viewers are brutally and provocatively attacked, which makes them forget that they are sitting in front of the screen. They are treated with a highly meaningful piece of reality, presented with passion and with no resistance, in an observant and intelligent way. (...) The projection room becomes filled with strong excitement. Polish film has not long been able to unleash so many powerful feelings and shrewd thoughts in the spectators. (...) Such is the signal that we are witnessing a significant event in the history of Polish cinema. Boleslaw Michalek, "Polish Documentary" 1956

POLISH ANIMATION ANTHOLOGY

"...These are sheer numbers and prizes that bear testimony to the past significance of Polish animation: 162 films exported in 1963 alone, 1974 proceeds from animated film exports higher than these from sales of feature films, dozens of highest prizes at most important festivals and competitions, Oscar for Zbigniew Rybczyński for "Tango", and so on, and so forth. The present anthology is the firs attempt to make at least a part of the extremely extensive output of Polish animators available to wider audiences. (...) The two DVDs which we present to cinema lovers, did not have enough room to contain all the outstanding Polish animated films of the last six decades, nor present all the makers worthy of attention. We do hope, however, that the selection is representative enough to let those viewers, who are not very well familiar with the history of Polish animation, get to know it better, while to its enthusiasts, it will bring back almost thirty of its gems."

Actually, the genre i work within is of secondary importance to me. I am interested in the diverse expressions of polish reality and their historical and cultural roots. I do not divide subject matter into contemporary and historical. [...] The reality which surrounds us is anchored in the past. I, for example, being a part of the process, am continuously growing out of the past. In my films, i try to make the viewer aware of this continuity. I believe that we can communicate on this level. I express my feelings in a lyrical, grotesque, exalted and ironic way. [...] I try to construct each piece so that the viewer can choose the tonality to suit his temperament, mood and experience. Because it is only time that can tell the truly tragic from the comical. [wojciech wiszniewski, "cinema", 1978/8]

Perhaps some scenes in my films suggest that I treat people like an entomologist when examining his insect specimens. [...] Stupidity is more flavoursome food for artistic matter, than correctness and norm. As for the human species...

I have done a TV play based on a short story by Lem. The plot evolves around the fact that the all-universe organization of united planets refuses our - people's - accession on account of the shortcomings intrinsic to mankind. (Profiles, 1980/10)

One should look for the sources of the legend that surrounds the person and work of Andrzej Munk (1921-1961) in his untimely and tragic death and, above all, in the belief that what he did create as filmmaker and what he had no time to create contains a mystery. This belief stems from the experience of his films and the feeling that his sudden death put an end to an important current in the history of Polish cinema; a separate phenomenon deprived of spiritual partners and followers. (...) He was fascinated with experiment in art. This is, after all, how his early documentaries have to be seen. In the 1950s, fictionalizing the documentary form - or to put things in the opposite way - employment of the documentary film poetics to depict fictional events, was the mark of his experimental approach, his search for new forms of expression. However, Munk treated formal experiments in a special way. One can safely assume that in most cases - which is particularly evident in the first, documentary period of his work - these formal experiments opposed, in moral terms, the imposed propaganda goals, standardized ideology and aesthetic norms. These became de-mythologized through revealing the presence of real people in the ideologically-programmed un-reality, as well as through his search for forms of cinematic imaging able to destroy certain binding conventions. Andrzej Munk, the rebellious documentary filmmaker, remained one even when he had moved away from the documentary towards feature films.

Marcel Loziński about his work:
Why do I shoot documentaries?
-Cause there are things going on around, in me, too, and I try to roll them into one.
-Cause I like asking questions about joy, fear, pain, hope.
-Cause I want to understand how it feels.
-Cause I don't believe in objective recording.
-Cause I value God's whim more than my imagination.
-Cause I am curious if others feel the way I do.
-Cause it's my chosen profession; I didn't want to work as an engineer.
-Cause I like to solidify reality, but only in such a way as not to distort it.
-Cause I gotta earn.*

"A particularly vital question that they raise, concerns the relation between the historical and the universal. The reason why Drygas's films enjoyed success throughout Europe, was not a tremendous interest of international audiences in the picture of life under Communist rule in Poland. The universal, the commonly understood, is hidden right in the historical detail, in the non-simplified truth of life at a concrete time and place, one that is easily convertible into other people's experience of the human fate. This is what all Maciej Drygas's films talk about in their widest, and perhaps most important, sense."

"I believe that the documentalist's profession consists in looking for tiny particles, which constitute - immodestly speaking - the truth about the man. Close observation and collection of the details that make up life, can make one grasp this truth. If only parts of it, if only just a flash... price: $19.95

In an extraordinary cross-gender performance, actress Krystyna Feldman becomes the curmudgeonly Polish folk artist Nikifor, a naive painter whose prolific talent and sheer stubbornness brought him national fame. Based on a true story, My Nikifor (crystal globe award, Karlovy Vary 2005) unfolds in mid-20th-century Poland across a gray winter landscape further oppressed by Communist party politics and perpetual shortages. The sickly beggar Nikifor, a cantankerous troll who dismisses everything and everyone, freely invades other people's homes uninvited in order to paint. When he claims the studio of state-employed painter Marian Wlosinski, Wlosinski's life begins to unravel. He can't figure out where Nikifor came from or where he belongs, can't get rid of him and, ultimately, can't help but adopt him at the expense of his own comfort and family. This vivid character study presents Nikifor as the necessary grit that upsets complacency, leaving us to ponder the Nikifors in our world today.

Teenagers in modern Warsaw: Kuba Brenner wants to become a violinist. Kuba wants to help his very shy friend, Oskar, to meet some girls. Through a series of complicated (and very humorous) accidents, Kuba finds himself in the middle of a meeting of the local Polish Mafia. Events go from bad to worse for Kuba when some men attempt to rob the gangsters: shots are fired, and two of the bandits, Grucha and Bolec, are wounded.

When the smoke clears, the gangsters' suitcase, stuffed with cash, has vanished, and the boy is missing as well. Kuba suddenly has a new, bigger problem to solve: the Mafia really wants to find him, and we all know what that means for our young friend.

One of the best Polish comedies of the late 1990's, "Boys Don't Cry" is a satirical look at the gangsters of Poland and some teens who accidentally get involved with them. The humor is black, sometimes vulgar, and always hilarious. The cast comes from the new generation of Polish actors, and all are very talented.

Quo Vadis is a grand historical epic based on the novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz running four and a half hours in length. Although this is long by most standards, it really does allow the plot to fully develop and be brought to a conclusion. We get a glimpse of many parts of life in Rome, from wild drunken parties with plenty of topless women, a gruesome close up of lions eating Christians in the coliseum, and even the burning of Rome itself.

The story has several elements that are all dovetail each other. We have a young patrician named Marcus Vinicius (Pawel Delag) who falls in love with Lygia (Magdalena Mielcarz), a Christian woman. At first she is not interested in him, but soon returns his love. Petronius (Boguslaw Linda), who is one of Nero's advisors, tries to help him physically capture his love as he has influence with Nero. Matters are complicated as Nero is out of control and is most concerned about his insane self-interests, which leads to trouble for many others.

Boguslaw Linda was one of the best performers in the film. As he was the middleman between Marcus and the crazed Nero, his position from the start was precarious. He portrayed the patrician who was calm and collected in moments of confusion, sincere with his feelings, and often had witty remarks. Linda's acting was fantastic.

Quo Vadis is perfect for those who enjoy historic epics. Overall, I thought the underlying message was about forgiveness and love, something we can all relate to and topics that would not hurt us to reflect upon. With nearly all of its characters experiencing moments of triumph and suffering, we witness and experience a wide range of emotions in this story that takes place about two thousand years ago.
