Poles
forcefully removed from the East after 1945 tell their
stories, recalling the grueling period when they abandoned
their homes, possessions, and neighbors. It is a story
about people forced to restart their lives in a strange
land. For these exiles, recalling Podole is remembering
the best times: they were young and, most importantly,
they were in their right place. Their final memories,
though, center on a sad and gray December day when they
were told they were headed toward western Poland. Many
of the elderly did not survive the long journey; the
remaining exiles at last reached the former German lands,
only to begin new lives of fear and poverty. Reflecting
upon their painful history, the exiles must come to
terms with the thought that they are too old for more
great changes-and that the past in Podole is gone.
